In chapter 8 of The Smart Kid, the school counselor and The Smart Kid go for a ride in her 1973 Oldsmobile Coupe, which has a front bench seat. This type of seating was common for several decades.
The second to the last U.S. automobile manufactured with a front bench seat was the Cadillac DTS. In 2013, it was replaced with the XTS, leaving only one new passenger car in the United States with an available front bench seat, the Chevrolet Impala. The bench seat option was dropped the next year.
