The Smart Kid – Trivia 16

In chapter 6 of The Smart Kid, Charleen watches a play, in 1979, that offers videotapes of the performance. The first commercial VHS recorder was offered in the US in 1977, and it sold for about $1400, which would be over $4000 now.
The JVC HR-3300 weighed about 30 pounds, but it could record (only) 2 hours, long enough for a full movie, leading to VHS winning the format wars over BetaMax.
