Review of Structuring Your Novel by K.M. Weiland
I loved reading this book. As an aspiring writer, it was very helpful to me to clarify how a novel should be structured for ultimate dramatic impact. Not only does it describe novel structure—most of the book is dedicated to that topic—it also describes scene and sentence structure. I never realized that there is a correct way to structure a sentence for best dramatic effect.
The book goes act by act, describing what each act should do for the overall storyline of the novel. It describes the role that each act should fill and the approximate percentages of the book’s volume that should be used for each act. It is not formulaic. It helps a novelist to create the appropriate skeleton for a story that can then be fleshed out any way that the writer wants.
I know that this is a book that I will refer back to as a helpful resource whenever I’m planning a novel. I also purchased the workbook to go with it. It’s a great companion tool that helps writers to think as they write in the workbook. I plan to buy a new workbook for each new novel that I work on.
